ECPAT-USA Applauds Today's EARN-It Act of 2020 Mark-Up
ECPAT-USA, the nation's leading in combating child exploitation and trafficking, today released the following statement on the mark-up of the EARN-IT Act of 2020.
"We applaud all the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, especially Chairman Graham and Senator Blumenthal, for their leadership on the EARN-IT Act of 2020. We are especially proud of the overwhelming grassroots efforts to kill deceptive amendments which would have significantly weakened this important legislation," said Lori L. Cohen, Executive Director of ECPAT-USA. "If enacted, websites would no longer be shielded from federal and state civil lawsuits for hosting third-party content containing child sexual abuse material. In addition, the EARN-IT Act of 2020 will authorize a commission of survivors, experts, advocates and industry members that would make recommendations to the Department of Justice on how web platforms should address child sexual abuse materials," she said.
The EARN-IT Act of 2020 must now be considered by the U.S. Senate and then be considered in the U.S. House of Representatives. ECPAT-USA is committed to ensuring the passage of this landmark legislation.
